MNAC Bucharest: INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR PROJECTS FOR 2017
1. Researcher in residence.

Theme: Re-constructing MNAC. The National Museum of Contemporary Art is in the midst of a radical transformation: reshaping of the collection and collecting strategies, change of location, change of policies concerning the relation with the cultural and commercial scenes, broadening of the research field. The residency is meant to help in preparing those new developments with an international perspective.
 
Period: 3 to 6 months in 2017 (the maximum period is encouraged).
 
Number of positions: Two.
 
Application deadline: 30.10.2016, 24:00 h.
 
Objectives: The grantee will develop a field research in order to identify the issues, problems and aspirations of the local community with respect to the role, strategy and activities of a new MNAC, reconstructed according to the practical circumstances of the present. The grantee will come with a set of conclusions to the MNAC management and to the MNAC Scientific Board. The grantee will sum-up those conclusions in an open format, preferably an exhibition and/or a book.
Requirements: We are looking for international curators/researchers of a broad cross-cultural vision, with a good command of English and with good communication skills. Team work or at least a close exchange between the two residents is preferred. The residents should be able to spend the whole period in Romania.
 
Conditions: 800 euro netto per month. Accommodation, local transport and one return ticket from the place where the resident is based. Work space with office facilities at MNAC. If the project submitted requires, travel costs in Romania will be covered up to 300 euro. For residents who spend the entire 6 months period in Romania, an extra return ticket to base can be negotiated. A separate budget will be reserved for the final delivery. A team of specialists from MNAC will support the residents with their research. At the end of the residency, the grantees will make an internal presentation of their research results for the museum staff.
 
Application format: A letter of intention; a work plan with a timeline; a budget of the final delivery, considering that MNAC will cover an amount up to 7.000 euro; CV / work portfolio. The applicant should draw a convincing plan of exploration and mapping of the place and role of MNAC in the local and national art scenes. 2. Curator in residence.
 
Theme: Young Romanian Art In An International Context. The National Museum of Contemporary Art has already an established position as a promoter of young talent in the field of Romanian and international visual culture. International applicants are invited to draw on the thriving scene of Romania, with a special focus on the young generations, and to contextualize it in a broader perspective. Relations with the art scenes from the region are encouraged.
 
Period: 3 to 6 months in 2017 (the maximum period is encouraged).
 
Number of positions: Two.
 
Application deadline: 30.10.2016, 24:00 h.
 
Objectives: The grantee will research the local scene according to the preliminary conceptual frame laid-out in the application, establishing connection lines within Romania and internationally between various personalities and creative tendencies. This will result in an exhibition + publication. New names of artists who have not yet been exposed at MNAC are preferred.
 
Requirements: We are looking for international curators of a broad cross-cultural vision, with a good command of English and with good communication skills. Curatorial teams are also encouraged to apply. The residents should be able to spend the whole period in Romania.

At the beginning of the residency, the grantees will make an internal presentation for the museum specialist. Residents may work with a facilitator from the museum team and will be supported by the MNAC for the production of the final delivery.

The grantee will submit a curatorial research proposal meant to frame conceptually the field research. The applicant should draw a work map and timeline. The applicant should detail the budget for the final delivery, considering that MNAC will cover an amount up to 7.000 euro. Additional funding can be negotiated with the selected artists for the production of new work.

The applications will be reviewed internally, with support from invited experts. The preliminary selection will be submitted to the Scientific Board for discussions and final approval. The results will be communicated on 09.12.2016.
