Art in Belarus, a frequent case in totalitarian countries, assumes the role of decoration or tool for ideological manipulation. Belarus has no institution for contemporary art, no multimedia courses at college or university, and no curatorship study (curators are artists themselves, to name A. Dureika, V. Vasiliev, A. Klinov, or Bergamot), contemporary art somehow manages to exist. It often thrives underground or abroad.

In the mid-1990s an extensive immigration of Belarusian artists began. Many of them have studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, Arts Academy in Düsseldorf, Academy of Media Art in Cologne etc. The essential events in Belarusian contemporary art take place outside the country, and Belarusian artists take part in international projects mainly in Europe. The majority of those who have left their homeland successfully adapts to European culture, while their art still carries traces of specific national experience.
