Zając Iwona
Born in Gdańsk, Poland in 1971. In 1999 she graduated from the Painting Department of the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2002 Iwona Zając has been a resident of the Artists Colony (now Young City) which used to be situated in the Gdańsk shipyard area.
In her art she attempts to explore social and feminist issues. Very often she makes herself or her friends the main characters of her works. Since 2000 she has focused on mural painting and has her works presented widely in Poland and abroad. The most well-known among her projects is ‘Shipyard’ – a series of stencils painted on the shipyard walls which depicts the stories of shipyard workers related to their work and everyday life. Throughout last years her interests shifted towards the issue of family which resulted in works such as: “Mummy”, “He taught me this”, “Tag” or “The women of my house”.
For many years she has worked with the Theatrum Gedanense Foundation and the Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre as a festival workshop trainer. Iwona Zając cooperates also with several social institutions as a coordinator of educational and artistic programmes and projects. As an artist she has received Sholarhip Of The Polish Ministry Of Culture (2007, 2011) and National Heritage and from the authorities of Pomorskie Province (2010). Iwona Zając was also appointed a nominee for the title of ‘The citizen of Gdansk 2007’.
