This program presents film as an artistic experimentation tool of interwar period Avant-garde, and above all as a new mean of visual creativity closely related to Avant-garde’s research in other areas of artistic creativity as painting, sculpture, photography or typography.

New mechanical media, photography and film were the subject of constant and thoughtful interest of the Avant-garde, as well in theory as in practice. The Avant-garde from the very beginning of its existence announced the beginning of the new era, modern XX century civilization, and with it a new art, new Avant-garde. It supposed to respond on requirements of modernity, with its form and its content. Apart from the photography, movie was not only one of the most characteristic trends of the avant-garde creation but also become new area of avant-garde creativity.

Interest in film in each Avant-garde movement manifested with different results. New media’s pictures for some representatives of the Avant-garde, were an alternative for the previous, traditional artistic techniques, for the others, become a tool broadening the Avant-garde area of art. The representatives of all the tendencies were connected with mutual fascination, fascination which source was notification of the place and the meaning of the film in new visual culture at the beginning of the XX century and discovering a new tool of visual creation in it.

Members of the Avant-garde undertaking film activity, most often becoming just one part of their diverse artistic practice, contrasted with their usual artistic activities, from one side negate it, from the other just broaden it. For the Avant-garde artists, pictures appearing in film camera were, visual phenomena, often pure plastic phenomena, which had attractive new media features: they were mechanical, allowing for various picture manipulation, had documentary value, precision, and dissimilarity with ways of human perception. Works of Marcela Duchampa, Man Ray’a, Hansa Richtera, Laszló Moholy-Nagy’a, Dżigi Wiertowa, Oskara Fischingera and Len Lya’a were based on those features

Initialization of new media by the Avant-gard – film and photography – in the field of modern art in XX century become one of the most significant and permanent influence of Avant-garde on the changes in the second half of XX century art. Avant-garde art made it equal with other tools of creation.
