LAZNIA 1 2008 - THE OUTDOOR GALLERY OF THE CITY OF GDAŃSK - SUMMARY OF THE JURY'S MEETING IN LAZNIA CCA - 3RD EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

3rd Edition of the International Competition of the “Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdansk” – Summary of the Jury’s meeting in Laznia CCA on 25-26 September 2008
On 25-26 September the Jury of the International Competition of the “Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdansk” gathered in CCA Laznia. The following members of the Jury participated in the meeting:
1)Enrico Lunghi, Artistic Director of the Casino Luxemburg Gallery, Luxemburg
2)Jacek Dominiczak, lecturer at the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts, Poland
3)Bettina Steinbrügge, curator, Artistic Director of Andersen’s Contemporary, Berlin, Germany
4)Adam Budak, curator, Museum-Joanneum in Graz, Austria (who could not participate in the meeting but was represented at the meeting by Norbert Weber)
5)Norbert Weber, Member of the international experts' committee of the Latvian Contemporary Art Museum (Riga)
6)Julia Draganovic, Artistic Director of Palazzo delle Arti Napoli, Naples, Italy
7)Jadwiga Charzynska, Director of “Laznia” Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdansk, Poland
During the meeting, the Jury selected eight candidates out of twelve artists and architects submitted to the first stage of the competition. Each member of the Jury was allowed to nominate two contestants. Through the vast scope and variability of the projects by presented artists the Jury showed the high possibilities for the art in the public space.
While making the selection the Jury considered the artistic adequacy of the propositions to the space assigned for the realization of the project in the 3rd edition of the Competition, their aesthetic values and social dimension. The nominated artists specialize in architecture, painting, sculpture, performance and design. In the chosen group there are internationally acclaimed artists and architects as well as young and promising authors.
The artists selected to the next stage of the competition are as follows:
1. Fred Hatt / Daniel Schlaepfer, (Switzerland)
2. Miks Mitrevics, (Latvia)
3. Tommi Grönlund / Petteri Nisunen, (Finland)
4. Su-Mei Tse (Luxemburg)
5. Marco Godinho, (Luxemburg)
6. Ivan Moudov, (Bulgaria)
7. Carmen Einfinger, (UK/USA)
8. AGREST Group, (Poland)
Jury decided that Fernando Sanchez Castillo (Madryt), whose project for the 2nd edition of the competition was submitted in incomplete state owing to circumstances beyond his control, was automatically added to the list of artists qualified for the 3rd edition of the competition.
By the end of February 2009 the artists listed above will be invited to Gdansk in order to get familiar with the space assigned for the competition, with the social issues of the district and the needs of the local citizens. They will also take part in educational workshops for the children of Lower City.
the competition entries, i.e. the designs for the artworks situated in the space of Dolna Street (the green space which connects two main streets: Lakowa and Jaskolcza and at the same time comprises the terminus for the public bus no. 121) will be submitted by 30 June 2009. The juries also decided that they will select the winning works during their next meeting on 8 July.
