Bios @ Techne @ Art is the presentation of audio-visual performances in which physiological activity of the human body is not merely a subject of artistic exploration, but above all the material basis of artistic creation.
Artists who participate in the project use a variety of medical technologies (ECG, EEG, EMG, MMG and MRI) to monitor and read the body’s physiological parameters. On the one hand bio signals are used for sonification and visualisation of an invisible, internal, visceral body’s activity and on the other they become source of data, which control audio and video software in the real time.
Artists create dynamic, interactive audio-visual performances which address a number of issues crucial to contemporary culture, such as:
How does the development of biomedicine and biotechnology influence and determine the cultural perception of the human body? How does new biomedicine shape cultural conceptualisation of life and living organisms? Does the development of biotechnology influence evolution of categories such as: subjectivity, individuality, and personality? How can art interpret the achievements and challenges of science and technology? How do modern science and new technologies change the form of artistic practices?
Marco Donnarumma will present two performances – Music For Flesh II and Ominous – in which he uses the Xth Sense (a biophysical, wearable interactive technology for musical performance and responsive milieux). Xth Sense is a biophysical interactive system he designed himself for sonification and visualization of muscle tension (MMG – Mechanomyogram). At the same time bio signals control software instrument created in Pure Data to generate music and video in the real time.
Gerard Lebik will present Tractography Neural Tracts Noise – a project in which he uses diffusion tensor imaging (a magnetic resonance imaging technique that enables the measurement of the restricted diffusion of water in tissue in order to produce neural tract images) to generate sound and visuals in the real time.
Maciej Ozog’s performance Transient Body/Liminal Space is based on the feedback loop between invisible activity of the human body and surrounding space of electromagnetic waves generated by various electronic devices such as: computer wireless networks, Bluetooth and cell phones. Bio signals technologies (ECG, EMR, MMG) are used for sonification of internal body’s functions and modified in the real time by external electromagnetic activity.
New media and sonic artist, performer and teacher, Marco Donnarumma was born in Italy and is based in London. Weaving a thread around biomedia research, musical and theatrical performance, participatory practices and subversive coding, Marco looks at the collision of critical creativity with humanized technologies. His biophysical system Xth Sense won the first prize in the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition and was named the 2012 “world’s most innovative new musical instrument” by the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, US. Marco has performed and spoken in 40 countries including US and South America, Europe, India, China, South Korea and Australia. His works have been selected at leading art events (ISEA, Venice Biennale, WRO Biennale), specialized festivals (FILE, Sonorities, Némo, Mapping, Piksel, Re-New, Laboral, EMAF) and major academic conferences (NIME, ICMC, Pure Data Convention, Linux Audio Conference@Stanford CCRMA, SICMF).
His projects have been reviewed on BBC, Reuters, Wired, Create Digital Music, We Make Money Not Art, Rhizome, Weave, El Pais, Digicult, and appeared in the book “New Art/Science Affinities” (CMU and Studio for Creative Enquiry, US). He was artist in residence at STEIM (NL), Inspace (UK), and the National School of Theatre and Contemporary Dance (DK). His work has been funded by the European Commission, British Council, Creative Scotland, New Media Scotland, and the Danish Arts Council.
Currently, Marco is a PhD student for the Embodied Audio Visual Interaction (EAVI) Research Group at Goldsmiths, University of London, supervised by Professor Atau Tanaka, and fully funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

Since 2007 is a director for the LivePerformers Meeting www.liveperformersmeeting.net, a leading annual gathering of international new media artists. He is an active member of SLE, Sound Lab Edinburgh www.sites.ace.ed.ac.uk/sdresearch, and an associate at CIRCLE www.eca.ac.uk/circle, a group of academics, researchers and creative practitioners based in Edinburgh. Gerard Lebik (1980) creates sound and music, either by improvisation, musical notation or through direct manipulation of sonic material using acoustic, electronic and electroacoustic media. Expands music area through various tools and techniques: tenor saxophone, contralto clarinet, zopan wave generators, electronics, air compressors, analog video feedback, sound objects and software. In 2007 graduated Wroclaw Academy of Music. Began from classical music by jazz, free improvisation to experimental, sound art and noise.

Maciej Ozog, PhD, media theorist, researcher and musician. His research focuses on history and theory of media arts, panoptic / postoptic surveillance culture, information society, bio art and posthumanism. He has published a number of articles on aesthetics of interactive art, history and theory of avant-garde film and video art, and experimental music. In 2007 he received postdoctoral grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for the project “Surveillance as Theme and Method of New Media Art”. The book of the same title will be published in 2013. In 2012 he has obtained a grant of the National Science Centre for the research project entitled “New Media Art as Critical Praxis”.
The founder of a number of musical and multimedia projects including: Noize Dance Esthetics, Spear (with Joanna Niekraszewicz), ben zeen (with Paweł Cieślak), Aural Treat (with Marta Heberle), Sub Spa and Quantum Vacuum Oscilatior.. In 2009 he started audio-visual project Nonstate with Bartłomiej Kuźniac and Mac Umatik. In 2012 he initiated his solo project Feral Sound Kitchen.
In 1998 he founded Ignis Projekt, the record label dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic experimental music. Ignis has released records of artists such as: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, EA and Spear.
Curator and co-curator of events such as: four editions of the exhibition “Die Kunst Ist Toth”, performances by Coil, Noise Makers Fifes, Column One, Troum, Xaviere Charles, Zbigniew Karkowski, Aube, Tetsuo Furudate, Asmus Tietchens, inter alia.
