LAZNIA 1 2007 - UNDER THE SHOWER OF ART - Mateusz Kwaterko GUY DEBORD - THE ART OF NEGATIVITY

For Guy Debord, a revolutionary, social critic and one of the most important representatives of the post-war European avant-garde, the unity of life and a work of art was the primary postulate. The original and subversive works of Debord, his penetrating and radical theories as well as intriguing strategies of objection were characterized by the principal existential coherence. To talk about this existence – the existence which in our spectacular times seems to be unbelievable– it is also to experience nostalgic time travel, going back in time to the still peculiar period, when the art happened to believe to have some meaning (apart from purely institutional or decorative) and the enlivening spirit of utopia still lingered over the political project of the radical left.
