LAZNIA 1 2008 - Xavier Van Wersch
04.04.2008, at 6 p.m.
“Most electronic instruments lack the kind of physical resistance acoustical instruments have. But they can resist to you in another way: if they don’t do what you expect them to. By inducing chaotic behaviour to the machines and then trying to keep control I try to achieve a more interesting situation, one that resembles the universe itself: a big mess, but somehow it works.”
Van Wersch’s concerts are raving performances in which coincidental and unintended reactions of the artist-performer and the machine-tool mark out the dynamics of the event. The artist builds his own “instruments” from broken and seemingly useless parts – from “electronic trash”.
Van Wersch gratuated from sonology at Royal Conservatory in the Hague. He worked with Nederlands Dans Theater and Icelandic National Ballet. He is director and founder of the society re.Bug whose target is to initiate and promote events where art, technology and ecology meet. He lives in Budapest where he teaches at Novus School of Arts.
