Oliver Walker is interested in the critical deconstruction of the socio-political systems that we live in. The project Mr Democracy explores trade, democracy and globalisation. The starting point for the artist was the written constitution of the UK, or rather, the lack of it. What is characteristic for this country is the lack of a formal written constitution. Both content and production were outsourced to China, and 1,000 specially manufactured plastic toys that speak the new constitution were imported into the UK. The title, Mr Democracy, refers to the term used to refer to western democratic notions used during the May Fourth and New Culture movements in the 1910s and 1920s.
