LAZNIA 1 2010 - Małgorzata Szymankiewicz BLAC HOLE. PAINTING
21.05 – 20.06.2010

The painting of Małgorzata Szymankiewicz could be briefly defined as the adventures of colourful spot. The spot, being a basic element of expression in visual arts, takes unexpected forms in the pictures of the artist. The spots may spill over the canvas and cross the frame of the picture. The intensive colour of the composition’s centre fades towards the edges, as if undergoing a subtle metamorphosis. The spot, though abstract, appears to be desperately communicating something, alusiveness being another key to Szymankiewicz’s visual world.
In the other series, the artist tells a different story, though, the one which comes to being in a more tactile manner. The spot paraphrases a hole eaten out by a worm in the canvas, creating a playground for artistic imagination.
In yet another one, the spot becomes a flat form breaking into pieces, which goes from disintegration back to the completeness made up anew.
Discussing her pictures, Szymankiewicz says: “They are on the verge of being very tongue-in-cheek about abstract painting, and they form a kind of trap for the viewer to fall into.”
