Dorota Chilińska’s and Andrzej Wasilewski’s works are a big challenge for their viewers – a sharp and uncompromising critique of the modern world. The artists often refer to well-known sources such as mythology, antiquity and biblical traditions. Cultural texts and their codes become a basis for universal analyses concerning human nature.
“Seemingly conscious choices invariably point at the silhouette of the golden calf which shimmers against the moonlight,” relate the artists, “the blue of the sky, golden sands and white breakers become a perfect background on the wallpaper of desires. It is easy to fill them with a familiar and recognizable form: with the glitter of modern gadgets, with the smooth skin of the promise of eternal youth, with the vitality of stress-free self-satisfaction. Reaching the gate on the back of the golden calf imposes a stiff posture, full of offended dignity and self-righteousness. Having poured liters of sweat, while straining one’s muscles, a state of total bliss comes, which cannot be disturbed even by a complex of the slight prick of sore muscles”.
