Althamer Paweł
Born in 1967 in Warsaw.
Contemporary Polish sculptor, collaborative artist, and creator of installations and video art.
He studied at the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the years 1988-1993. His thesis, under the direction of Grzegorz Kowalski, was a sculpture titled “Autoportret” (“Self Portrait”).
At first he sculpted figures using simple techniques and unconventional materials, then used a metal mesh and dressed the sculptures in old clothing. The next stage of his work was devoted to the problem of loneliness, isolation and alienation. Inspired by spaceships, he built capsules, devices, suites, whose aim was to lose their touch from the reality.
In the mid-90’ he devoted himself to social issues, especially the aspect of place of art and artistic work in the surrounding world.
In 2004 he received the Vincent van Gogh prize. He regularly cooperates with the Foksal Gallery Foundation. In January 2010 the artist received the "Special Prize for a Culture Creator" in scope of the Paszporty Polityki awards.
