LAZNIA 1 2013 - On both sides of the camera: Małgorzata Radkiewicz
the work of women in contemporary art. and cinema
1 MARCH 2013, 7 p.m.
The topic discussed at the meeting will be artistic expression by women, and its diversity in terms of themes, style and media used. During the meeting, the topics addressed will include those taken up in the book The Lords of the Gaze: Film Theory and the Practices of Women Directors and Artists, which discusses the work of women artists who use audio-visual forms, including film, video, and new media. An analysis of selected films and art works will be conducted from the perspectives of cultural studies, film studies, and gender theory. This will make it possible to place the featured materials in different aesthetic and technological contexts, and, in particular, to consider their place in audio-visual culture and (multi) media communication. The presentation will indicate the latest trends in how gender studies theoretically reflects upon film, which is related to an interdisciplinary approach to the issue of representation, but also to the reception and interpretation of works produced by women.

Małgorzata Radkiewicz – film theorist and assistant professor at the Institute of Audiovisual Arts. Director of the postgraduate programme in Gender Studies at the Jagiellonian University. She deals with the issues of cultural and gender identity in contemporary cinema and the visual arts.
