British video art preview from the collection of LUX

Adjunct from dominant art historical constructs, the history of British film and video art has never exactly fit into an easy classification. Organisations like the London Filmmakers Co-op in the late 1960's and later the London Electronic Arts in the 1970's, came from the need for a space and resource for the experimental and avant-garde articulation of the moving image, not only as a medium but also as a mode of social, political and aesthetic critique. This vital discourse in film and later video became a possibility of interrogating subject/object relations as temporal and spatial structures. Relations between subject, object, content and form were collapsed and reconstituted. Such structural re-presentations are paralleled in works like Gilbert and George's “A Portrait of the Artists as Young Men” 1970 and “The Singing Sculpture” 1992.

The works presented in this programme move from some of the early, rare films in the LUX collection, like Germano Facetti and Paolo Gori’s “Victoria Etcetera” through to contemporary works like UK artist Laure Provost's work “Monolog”. Each articulates a different attempt at interrogating the problematic nature of mediated representation, a concern with the materiality of moving image and the aesthetic potentiality of its language.

The opening talk before the projections will be given by Gil Leung – a writer and curator based in London. She is the editor of VERSUCH journal and Distribution Manager at LUX as well as writing for Afterall and various other publications
