In the 1990s the socio-political transformations and the inevitability of cultural verifications changed the system of references fundamental for the functioning of artistic culture. One of the most frequently raised questions concerned the issue of identity, considered both in the domain of individual experience and in terms of more general discussions about the identity of Polish culture. Distancing itself from any attempts at reconstructing the identity, the exhibition observed what in the relations between art and reality of that decade was the object of artistic identifications and disidentifications, and what sort of experiences were given voice. The presented works prompted not the question about identity itself, but the question about the strategies and the areas of negotiating identity.
