LAZNIA 1 2001 - Bernhard Kahrmann ZOOM
14.09-07.10.2001

Curator: Małgorzata Taraszkiewicz-Zwolicka

Kahrmann’s installations concerned the interference of the internal world in the urban, public space. They were constructed of the most basic elements, determined by the changing sequences of slideshows. The artist illustrated in this way the tearing of the cold, uncomplicated form of the buildings with their internal, orderly life. The city at night uncovers many unexpected communication solutions, utilitarian against the daytime rush. Lit by artificial light, the interiors of flats determine the external appearance of the buildings and bring false hope for the existence of intimacy. In the work Heading Nowhere presented in Laznia, the artist validated the presence of the rhythmically operating projectors, using their peculiar staccato to harness the viewer. He translated the unavoidable technological fact into a method of mastering the viewer’s emotions.
