LAZNIA 1 2011 - THE OUTDOOR GALLERY OF THE CITY OF GDANSK - ART AND PUBLIC SPACE - SYMPOSIUM

The First Gdansk Outdoor Gallery Symposium initiates a series of professional exchanges and debates focused on synergies that raises from the encounters of arts, publics, and spaces. The challenge is to clear a specific path towards the advancement of both theory and practice of arts in/of public spaces.
The intention of The First Gdansk Outdoor Gallery Symposium is to reflect on the 5 years of the Gallery’s activity; is to outline its specific theoretical discourse; is to connect it with the current discourse of the field.
BACKGROUND
Post-functional approach to the city continuously advances towards the idea of urban sustain-ability. Today, from space we are expecting not only its instant functional response, but also a thorough, slow if necessary, action to help sustain the world. This change results in raising public re-cognition, that streets, squares and other city spaces are not only the zones for permanent movements and rapid commercial or political propaganda. Public spaces are also the areas for continuous re-thinking and slow re-evaluation of culture codes. Gdansk Outdoor Gallery is eager to monitor and stimulate these processes.
Gdansk Outdoor Gallery was established in 2005 and is already running a fourth edition of its international program. Four artworks created and selected during the previous editions are already built within public space of the Lower Town in Gdansk. Following projects are under development in design offices. Finally, the Gallery is preparing for the next fifth edition, which will be linked to a large-scale construction of entirely new public spaces: a sequence of eight Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway stations and urban spaces associated with them.
THE SYMPOSIUM PROGRAMME
11:00 a.m. – 1 p.m. the panelists’ introductory statements (10 minutes each)
2 p.m. – 3 p.m. the panelists’ discussion
3 p.m. – 4 p.m. open discussion with invited audience
The Symposium will be translated simultaneously. Languages: Polish and English.
Sounds and images of the Symposium will be recorded for documentation and preparation of a book documentary edition.
