LAZNIA 1 2008 - THE OUTDOOR GALLERY OF THE CITY OF GDAŃSK - OPENING OF THE LKW GALLERY
24.06.2008

Curator: Jadwiga Charzyńska
Coordination : Anna Szynwelska

LKW Gallery by Lex Rijkers and Daniel Milohnic is the winning project of the first edition of the International Competition of The Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdansk in 2005. A lorry stuck under the overpass by Szopy Street symbolizes the isolation of the Lower City from the Centre by the viaduct and emphasizes the social and mental differences of the two neighbouring places. Locating LKW Gallery in the public space will facilitate greater integration of the local society, education of children and realizing a number of artistic and social projects activating the citizens. LKW is to become easily accessible, alternative cultural center – a place for workshops, exhibitions, film projections, and other forms of cultural and artistic activity.

The first educational project to take place at LKW Gallery is City of Talented Children – a series of workshops realized by LAZNIA CCA in cooperation with Artistic Association KULTYWATOR 3MIEJSKI and Local Initiative Association BLIZEJ CENTRUM. The project comprises of workshops incorporating elements of dance, stilts, plastic arts and vocal training. The workshops will be finalized by a musical and dance performance directed by the participants and supervised by the project instructors who will also oversee the process of designing the costumes and the stage.

The Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdansk is a long-term project aiming to create a permanent collection of works of art in urban space as well as at social and architectonic transformation of the neglected Lower City district. The project is a mile stone in the long-term process of revitalization and changing the character of the district where Laznia CCA is situated.  The works assigned for realization are chosen by international jury in regularly announced, closed competitions. So far, two editions of the competition took place: the first in 2005 and the second in 2007. The third edition will be held in 2009.
