LAZNIA 1 2009 - ARTISTIC PROJECTART AFTER HOURS

Artists: Kuba Bielawski, Iza Chamczyk, Dorota Chilińska, Iza Cieszko, Ania Cygańczyk, Monika Gałaj, Ola Grudzińska, Maciek Jabłoński, Bartek Jarmoliński, Janusz Krysztop, Sebastian Kularski, Anka Leśniak, Izabela Maciejewska, Aga Munk, Gosia Piotrowska, Karolina Stępniowska, Norbert Trzeciak, Andrzej Wasilewski, Remik Wojaczek.
In 2002 in the Laznia Center for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk exhibition Sposób na życie (The way for living) took place. Exhibition showed what is the main source of income for Polish artists. At that time already recognized Polish artists took part in it, inter alia: Przemysław Kwiek, Anna Baumgart, Julita Wójcik, Robert Rumas. It seems that such artists, renown not only in Poland, should be provided with special scholarships, unfortunately many of them earn for living painting flowers, running a café, or designing advertisements.
Art After hours is made in reference to that exhibition, analyzing figure of the Polish artist from a bit surprising, economical point of view. This time presentation is expanded on the young, freshly graduated Polish artists, from the whole country, whom just started to wrestle with problems of Polish reality.
Everyday life in Poland isn’t a fairytale. Present scholarship system often doesn’t cover minimal social needs, not to mention “art making” costs, and the road to get money from the government is long and winding. The alternative solution is a non-conformist attitude of freelancers, but then creative energy is often lost in pursuit for money. It creates paradoxical situation in which artists are forced to make art hastily, at night, in the “free time”. There is a lack of coherent, well thought, young art promotion strategy/ policy. How do Polish artists feel in this situation? Will they resign from their own dreams for the sake of every day life? Which way to go? Chase the money or “poor” independence?
Art After Hours is analyzing conditions in which “young” Polish art is created. It’s also a question about its state on the art market. How much money can artists earn for their work, and are artistic realizations important for them meeting equal commercial success?
